TEACHING
OF POETRY
Poetry is a thing of beauty of languages. From, thought and emotion. It
is that aspect of language which fundamentally provides pleasure to the
readers. It develops sensitivity to language and literature.
Poetry is for pleasure. It deepens our understanding and appreciation of
beauty and human experience. It lightens our sensitiveness to beauty,
especially, beauty of language and of thought. It enlarges our sensibilities,
our values and our imagination. It helps us to appreciate spiritual things of
life.
The words in a poem are so arranged that they give us pleasant sound
such as we may have from music. We derive pleasure from the words themselves
and from their rhythmical arrangements. Rhythm is a universal phenomenon where
ever there is movement. The regular rhythm of poetry appeals to the children
and they develop liking for it.
Poetry is an original form of English literature. Each poem is a unit by
itself and any attempt to analyze it destroys its beauty. It is not for
language study. Our aim is to help pupils to appreciate and enjoy poems.
There is no difference teaching
prose and poetry lesson plans, but the only difference is the students have to
add their own lines to the poem already given in the text.

O
silent goblet! Red from head to heel,
How
did you feel
When
you were being twirled upon the potter’s wheel
Before
the potter gave you to the World?
‘I
felt a conscious impulse in my clay
To
break away
From
the great potter’s hand that burned So warm,
I
felt a vast
Feeling
of Sorrow to be cast
Into
my present form’.
Harindranath Chattopadhyaya
